JJ Rizal, S.S. (born February 12, 1974) is an Indonesian historian who actively addresses and understands issues in society through his writings in various print and online media. He completed his studies in 1998 at the Department of History, Faculty of Letters, University of Indonesia (FSUI), with a thesis titled “Sitor Situmorang: Political Biography 1956-1967.” Parts of this thesis were later published in 2014 in the book Sitor Situmorang: Short Biography 1924-2014 as a lengthy obituary when the writer passed away on December 21, 2014. In addition, he also collected and edited almost all of Sitor’s works, ranging from poetry, short stories, essays, children’s stories, plays, etc.

He founded and has led Penerbit Komunitas Bambu (Kobam) since 1998 until now. This publisher specializes in books on historical themes and is considered to have made a significant contribution to the understanding of history among the community. In 2006, Rizal developed a new publishing house within Komunitas Bambu called Masup Jakarta, which specializes in publishing books on the local history of Jakarta. For his dedication to making historical knowledge widely accessible to the community, he received the Jakarta Book Awards from the Indonesian Publishers Association in 2011. In 2019, Rizal became a member of the Jakarta World Book Capital City committee.
